TOPIC: SEWAGE & REFUSE DISPOSAL

  1. MEANING OF SEWAGE: Sewage is the mixture of human and liquid waste. It also refers to liquid waste such as urine waste and feaces.

METHODS OF SEWAGE DISPOSAL

  1. Water Cisterm: In this method there is water closet and squart. It requires the use of water to flush down feaces and others.
  2. Open Dump: In this method, the liquid waste is poured on the ground. The method posses danger as it can pollute the environment.
  3. Surface Latrine: People go in the bush and defecate.
  4. Pit Latrine: Pits are dug and constructed into a latrine. A sitting or squarting method is usually provided with a concrete or wood slabs.
  5. Chemical Closet: This cisterm came into being as a result of advancement and is very useful mostly in air craft, ships and motor coaches. Little space is required. It is usually small bucket held inside or portable metal container.
  6. MEANING OF REFUSE

Refuse is the solid waste usually composed of organic materials such as leaves, food and an organic materials.

METHODS OF REFUSE DISPOSAL ARE:

  1. Controlled Tipping: Pit or dry land may be used in this method. The rubbishes tipped each day is in planned manner.
  2. Incineration: This is a method where by solid refuse are burnt in an incinerator.
  3. Burning: Burning is the same as the burning described in an incinerator is controlled while in the burning is the open type.
  4. Dumping in the River or Seas: As the name implies. All the rubbishes collected are being disposed in the rivers.
  5. Compositing or Decompositing: This is not easy because all the bottles, tins etc must be removed. It must also require frequent turning.
  6. Open Dumping: A good number of normal communities practice this. It simply means dumping refuse in any open space which are not covered.

Pulverization: This is a method where by refuse is been into pieces by machine. It is recommended because it is sometimes used as a preliminary controlled tipping. It may serve or useful mixture of fertilizer.
