THE CONCEPT OF PATTERN

Pattern is a piece of paper drafted and cut to size and shape, used for cutting out fabric pieces for sewing out dress. These may be commercial or drafted .it is the design of the garment.

There are two types of commercial patterns. (a) Printed and (b)perforated types.

  1. The printed type has all the cutting and fitting lines printed clearly with written instruction.
  2. The performed type has all important makings indicated by holes of various sizes and arrangements.

There are also the following other type of non-commercial patterns-pattern drafted by;

  1. ModelingTHE CONCEPT OF PATTERN
  2. Knock-off-design method
  3. Grading or adjusting already available pattern.
  4. Computer-aided design and
  5. Flat pattern method

 

THE MEANING OF DRAFTING

This is a term used to describe an engineering approach to producing patterns, using a set of measurement obtained from a figure while following a set of guiding instructions .the instructions are interpreted into drawing or shapes on paper or fabrics .the accuracy of a drafted pattern depends on the accuracy of the body measurement, drafting instruction and skill of the pattern maker.

ADVANTAGES OF THE USE OF PATTERNS

There are many advantages of the use of patterns;

  1. It is a master plan which can be made on paper or cardboard sheets.
  2. It is constructed to fit a particular individual or a standard figure.
  3. It is simply plain, does not include any seams, hems or extra fullness.
  4. It is made up of five different patterns here underlined listed.
  • The front bodice
  • The back bodice
  • The basic skirt front
  • The basic skirt back and
  • The basic sleeve

  3. Office pin
  4. Pencil
  5. Armhole curve or French curve
  6. Measurement tape
  7. Needle
  8. Scissors
