DIRECT AND INDIRECT

Direct speech is the reproduction of the exact words or statement of the speaker. If such words are in written form, they are placed in inverted commas “ ” Example.

  1. “ She is hungry”, Peter said
  2. “I will be in school tomorrow”, John stated.
  3. “ Nigeria celebrates its 40th anniversary today”, said the president

Indirect speech is a speech that does not contain the original words of the speaker it undergoes some changes. Indirect speech is when a direct statement is converted or changed from the original speech it becomes an indirect or reported speech. This stage of expression does not require inverted commas. Eg.

  1. Peter said that she was hungry
  2. John state that he would be in school the next day.
  3. The president said that Nigeria celebrated its 40th anniversary that day.
