CREATING AN E-MAIL ACCOUNT

What is an E-mail Address?

This is a unique address used to locate and identify someone’s e-mail box on the internet.

it is similar to sending letters to someone through the post office.

PARTS OF THE E-MAIL ADDRESS

The e-mail address is made up of the following 3 or 4 parts it could either be;

 

  1. Username
  2. At sign or symbol
  3. Host
  4. Site type

OR

  1. Username
  2. At sign or symbol
  3. Domain

 

Username

The username of the person or organization that own the e-mail address.

At Sign or Symbol

The At sign or symbol is ‘@’ on the keyboard.

Host

The name of the organization that maintains the internet site is the host e.g yahoo, Hotmail, google, e. t. c

Site Type

This determines the e-mail service site type the address fall under or is being grouped to.  Most times the site type tells the purpose in which such e-mail account is opened.

Some e-mail address may include country code if it pleases the user to do so e.g john@yahoo.com.ng (where ‘ng’ stands for Nigeria).

Examples of e-mail addresses are:

franco@yahoo.com

emeka@hotmail.com

james@evans-edu.ng

The different parts of an e-mail address are shown in the table below.

Domain

The domain is the combination of two part of an e-mail address, the host and the site type forms the domain.  Examples are yahoo.com, Hotmail.com etc.

The site type tells us how the internet services could be put into use.

These are:

.com for commercial

.edu for education

.gov for government

.org for organization

.net for network resources

.int for international organizations.

CREATING E-MAIL ACCOUNT, OPENING AND SENDING E-MAIL

Steps in creating an e-mail account

  1. Click on any internet explorer
  2. Type the e-mail site of your address e.g www. Yahoo.com
  3. Click on SIGN UP or press ENTER key
  4. Follow the instructions in completing form displayed.
  5. After completing the form click on submit to create the account.

Steps in Checking an E-mail

  1. Click on the internet explorer
  2. Type e-mail site of your choice e.g yahoo.com
  3. Enter your e-mail ID, address and password.
  4. Click on SIGN IN
  5. Click on check MAIL or BOX
  6. The list of mail on your inbox will appear
  7. Check the mail you want to open and read.

NOTE: After accessing mail from your e-mail, make sure that you sign out. This will disallow unauthorized access to your box.

Steps in Sending an E-mail

  1. Click on the internet explorer icon on the desktop or tool bar
  2. Type the e-mail site of your address e.g yahoo.com
  3. Enter your e-mail ID address and password and click SIGN IN or press ENTER key
  4. Click on COMPOSE or NEW MAIL
  5. Type the mail you want to send or load from storage media such as floppy disk, flash drive e .t. c
  6. Type the recipient or designation mail address of the person you are sending the mail, in the ‘TO’ box, also, if you are sending a copy of the same message to another person, type his/her address in the ‘CC’ box.
  7. Click on SEND to send the mail. A message confirming the successful sending will appear.
  8. After sending click ‘back to box’

  1. It allows documents to be sent and received (e-mail)
  2. Provides latest news on various events world wide (e-news)
  3. It provides enough information on any topic in any subject area (e-learning)
  4. It provides latest information on any weather condition (e-weather information)
  5. It provides library information (e-library)
  6. It is used for playing games, music and watching videos (e- entertainment)
  7. It is used for business transaction such as sales, advertisement, shopping, invoicing, payment etc.
  8. It is a means of getting job (e-employment)
  9. It enables one to travel to different part of the world on the internet o view new places with new things to see and hear (e-excursion)
  10. It is faster and cheaper when compared with other means of communication.

ABUSES OF INTERNET

  1. FRAUD:

Fraud is a crime of deceiving people in order to gain something from them such as money or goods.

  1. PORNOGRAPHY SITES:

These are bad sites that displays sexual images in a way that can make people feel sexually excited.

  1. PIRACY OF SOFTWARE:

This is the act of copying unauthorized software, the right which belong to someone else.

  1. CONSPIRACY:

A secret plan made that is harmful or illegal.

  1. MALWARE/VIRUS:

A computer virus that affect the computers on the internet thereby causing loss of files on the device by corrupting it.

  1. TERRORISM:

The use of violence such as damaging, destroying, bombing etc to get something.

  1. STEALING:

Act of taking something that belong to someone else without permission.
